Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, says Britain’s exit from the European Union will not have an immediate impact on Nigeria.
Onyeama stated this while answering reporters’ questions at a civic reception organised by the Eke people of Udi local government area of Enugu State to honour him and the Director-General Voice of Nigeria, Mr Osita Okechukwu.
The minister said the exit of Britain from the EU would affect the UK more.
“There won’t be any immediate effect on Nigeria as such. I think it will affect Britian more,” Onyeama said.
He, however, admitted that BREXIT would affect members of the Commonwealth to which both countries belong.
Onyeama said: “Britain is the leader of the Commonwealth and had put more emphasis on the European Union. It could affect us in that way. Maybe, they might shift attention now to the Commonwealth, but even that is not sure.”
According to Mr Onyeama, Brexit would also not have much negative effect on the trade relations between Nigeria and Britain.
