According to the job creation unit in the presidency, over 400,000 successful registrations has been received since the commencement of the programme’s registration.

“We have been very impressed by the enthusiastic response to the call for applications. As at noon on Monday June 13, only 36 hours after the launch of the portal, 403, 528 applicants had successfully registered on the site and were in the middle of completing the application process.

“We are also very pleased that the registrations have been taking place without any hitches or system failures, considering the volume of response,” Mr Afolabi Imoukhede, senior special assistant to the president on job creation said.

All together the website has received over 35 million hits since Saturday midnight.

N-Power is designed to help young Nigerians acquire and develop life-long skills to become solution providers in their communities and to become players in the domestic and global markets.

According to the presidency, the programme will provide employment opportunities for 500,000 graduates as teachers, agriculture extension advisers, healthcare assistants, and civic and adult education instructors in communities across Nigeria.

There will also be a pool of 100,000 software developers, hardware service professionals, animators, graphic artists, building services professionals, artisans and others.

A total sum of N500billion is said to have been provided for the programme in the 2016 budget.

The government has assured Nigerians that the application process would be structurally robust, transparent and fair and based on objective criteria.

Mrs Maryam Uwais, special adviser to the president on social investments, said: “We are committed to ensuring transparency, equity, fairness and balance in the selection process, always bearing in mind our sundry nuances and contexts, to achieve efficient and optimal results in our N-Power programme.”

The programme has three main segments, and they are:

• N-Power Teacher Corps

• N-Power Knowledge

• N-Power Build

President Buhari presented a N6.08 trillion budget before a joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, December 22, 2015.

In his address to the lawmakers and Nigerians, the leader of the nation predicted a capital expenditure of N1.8trn, which is 30% of the total budget.

President Buhari also announced that his administration would implement social welfare programmes to ease the suffering of “the poorest of the poor,” and that 500,000 graduate teachers would receive the jobs to teach in primary schools across Nigeria.
