PDP warns PMB against attempt to strip govs of their immunity

– The PDP in Osun state reacted to alleged plans to impose travel ban on governors of Ekiti and Rivers states – Ayodele Fayose and Nyesom Wike

– The PDP reminded Buhari that the same Section 308 of the Constitution that gives him immunity also provides the governors with same leverage

– The party warned President Muhammadu Buhari that tampering with the constitutionally guaranteed immunity of governors would spell doom for Nigeria

The PDP reminded Buhari that the same Section 308 of the Constitution that gives him immunity also provides the governors with same leverage.

The Osun state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned President Muhammadu Buhari against acts that may plunge Nigeria into civil war.

Vanguard reports that the warning was contained in a statement issued by Prince Diran Odeyemi, the PDP’s director of research, publicity and strategy, on Tuesday, May 31, in Osogbo.

Reacting to alleged plans to impose travel ban on governors of Ekiti and Rivers states – Ayodele Fayose and Nyesom Wike, the party stated that tampering with the constitutionally guaranteed immunity of governors would spell doom for the country.

Calling on the president to drop his plans immediately, Odeyemi noted there was nothing done to Buhari by Fayose and Wike that Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state did not do to Goodluck Jonathan while he was in office.

Odeyemi reminded Buhari that the same Section 308 of the Constitution that gives him immunity also provides the governors with same leverage.

According to the spokesman, adding the salt of travel ban on governors with immunity, which is the same as the president, to the injury of constant flouting of court orders by the Buhari administration in the last year is not portraying the president as a true democrat.

“Since the news broke of plans by Buhari to ban PDP governors Ayo Fayose and Nyesom Wike from travelling using Department of State Security as threat, images of events of the past years have kept on reappearing.

“We don’t want anything that can truncate this democracy. Attempt to strip two PDP governors of their immunity is capable of enacting civil war,” the statement read in part.

The PDP urged all past leaders to prevail on Buhari to shelve the idea to save the country from constitutional crisis and needless tension.

Meanwhile, Fayose has recently dared the federal government to carry out the alleged plot of preventing him from travelling out of the country.

“I am not surprised or disappointed by this latest plot of the Buhari’s government because the President Buhari that we know is a man without any atom of respect for the rights of Nigerians as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and this he demonstrated as a military dictator and now demonstrating as a democratically elected president,” he said.
