Rio Olympics: Five events Nigeria is expected to win medals

After a disappointing outing at the London 2012 Olympics where Team Nigeria did not win any medal, the athletes will be looking to compete against the world to win medals for the country.

Preparation for the Rio Olympics might not be 100 per cent but Nigeria has proven in the past that during difficult times is when they tend to produce their best outings.

Nigeria have world class athletes who can equally compete with their foreign counterparts as seen in the football event where Nigeria defeated Japan by 5-4.

Here are five events Nigeria is expected to win medals

1. 100, 200 meters and Long Jump:

One woman who has been consistent in the sprint races is Blessing Okagbare and she is one of the brightest hope for Nigeria in terms of winning medals in the Track and Field events.

Okagbare has been in fine form in her recent races especially the Diamond League competitions and her only to wining gold is Jamaica’s Shelly-Anna Fraser-Pryce.

2. Relays: In past Olympic Games Nigeria have always been a contender in competing with dominant countries in relay races and with Okagabare involved in the 4x100m relay race, the nation have the hope of finishing in the top three.

3. Wrestling:
Another medal prospect at the ongoing Rio Olympics is in the wrestling event where Odunayo Adekuoroye has been the shinning a star in female wrestling.

Adekuoroye emerged number one in the Indian Wrestling League and also won gold at the past Common Wealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

4. Table Tennis:
For the first in the history of the Games the Ping Pong sport has been arranged in another format where only two players will represent their respective countries. This puts China who usually have five representatives on the edge.

The duo Aruna Quadri and veteran Olympian, Segun Toriola have the chance of scrapping into the medals table in Table Tennis because both players are top world ranked athletes in the sport.

5. Football: The Dream Tam VI have set the balling rolling in the Rio Olympics and everyone is looking up to the U-23 team to give Nigeria another historic goal medal like the Atlanta 96′ squad.

Siasia is one man who will want to overcome the 2008 Beijing nightmare where Messi and his teammates edged Nigeria by 1-0 in the final to win gold.
