On Monday, while movie lovers were still drooling over the excitement the Emmys Awards held on Sunday night came with, news broke that Hollywood’s power couple, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are getting a divorce, two years after their marriage.
Angelina Jolie, 41, had filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, 52, citing irreconcilable differences. A report from TMZ, celebrity online site, stated, however, that the divorce was triggered by “a conflict over the kids, substance abuse and anger.”
According to reports that sited sources close to the couple, Jolie filed the divorce because she is extremely upset with Pitt’s method of parenting their six kids.
In the divorce filed by Jolie, she asked for physical custody of their six kids while requesting that the court allows Pitt visitation.
Quite surprisingly, Jolie is not asking for spousal support as is often the case when a woman files for divorce.
According to another source sited by People.com, the couple had been separated, even before now.
“They have definitely spent more time apart this year; but it’s still a shock. They just celebrated their wedding anniversary together,” the source claimed.
An estimate by celebrity estate attorney Donald David put the couple’s combined worth at about $600 Million – Pitt: $350 million and Jolie: $275 million.
Explaining why Pitt has a couple more bucks than Jolie, David said: “The reason for the disparity is Pitt has a bigger inventory. And a higher value and a higher residual interest.”
The reason for this will not be unrelated to Pitt taking part in high-grossing films over the past few decades while Jolie took a step back from the big screen to do some humanitarian work with the likes of the UN, the WHO and UNICEF.
Pitt’s huge worth is also related to the fact that he is a co-owner of production company, Plan B, which produced lucrative hits like World War Z as well as Oscar contenders 12 Years a Slave and The Big Short.
Added to the cash spinning project Pitt is on, he also starred in big-budget movies over three decades, including Fight Club, Ocean’s Eleven and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
In contrast to Pitt, Jolie took on a few high-salaried blockbusters like Salt and Maleficent, and directed Unbroken.
Jolie has been mostly focused on her own, less commercial directorial projects like In the Land of Blood and Honey, By the Sea, and her upcoming Netflix movie about the Cambodian genocide – First They Killed My Father.
