Serena Williams will go home with less Wimbledon prize money this year as a result of Brexit, according to reports.
The world number one has lost out on an estimated $380,000 (£293,000) due to the value of the pound falling following the UK’s decision to leave the EU.
According to Bloomberg, the female winner’s prize is worth $2.59 million (£2 million) when converted to US dollars, down from $2.97 million pre-Brexit.
It means the 34-year-old will walk away with less than she did for winning last year’s tournament – despite a 6.4 per cent increase in prize pay-out this year.
The tennis star also lost out on an estimated further $67,000 (£50,000) prize money after winning the women’s double crown with her sister Venus.
No d o u b t celebrating a seventh Wimbledon crown and equalling Steffi Graf’s record of 22 grand slam titles in the Open era will have softened the blow.
Wi l l iams said she was ‘relieved’ after edging a thrilling final 7-5 6-3 against German Angelique Kerber.
